Abstract
Lymphedema is a chronic disease that involves the accumulation of protein interstitial fluid in the upper and lower extremities and that is caused by congenital anomaly, tumor, radiation therapy, or injury induced by surgery or infection. The patient suffers from the cosmetic problem accompanying lymphedema, and experiences functional loss. Many patients miss the proper therapy time, which aggravate their lymphedema. Complex decongestive physiotherapy (CDP) has been recommended as a therapeutic procedure. In addition, the effectiveness of weight loss induced by diet adjustment and aerobic exercise for the treatment of upper-extremity lymphedema was recently reported. This paper reports the effect of weight loss on lower-extremity lymphedema, of which there has been no previous report. Four cases of lower-extremity lymphedema were studied. In all 4 cases, after weight loss there was a greater reduction of the lower-extremity circumference at the affected site than at the unaffected site.
